One of our website projects this past year was for a historic cycling club in New York, Unione Sportiva Italiana that was established in 1908. Their old website was a "broken" site that needed to be rebuilt so that members could enroll and pay their annual membership online, find out about upcoming rides, buy club gear etc.
However, one of the most interesting aspects of the project was to record the club's history with their old photos, newspaper clippings and stories about past champions, olympic athletes, and the role of the sporting clubs of New York at the turn of the century. The sporting clubs were a central part of the community, especially for recent immigrants. Cycling had a massive following, with large crowds attending 6- day cycling races at the original Madison Square Garden.
All the photos needed to be recovered, edited and retouched in photoshop, creating an organized photo library that could be retained and reused by the organization. All photos uploaded to Wix's media manager can be downloaded by the site owner, which is helpful for an organization like this.
For the club history, we used a backend database to dynamically display the photos and the story of the club from 1908 onwards. You can see the result here.
The club is run completely by volunteers. It was great working with this historic cycling club in creating a website that streamlines their annual membership dues, allowing them to manage the site themselves, and record their great history. The club now rides out of Westchester, so if you are in the area and are looking for a new cycling club check them out. www.usicycling1908.org
